Exterior and Interior

While both trucks received makeovers recently, the Ford F-150 got their redesign first, and the look is now familiar to most. The F-150 is tall with a box-shaped cab. The windows slant for enhanced visibility. Depending on the trim level you select, there are different grilles, and most get a chrome bar between the headlights. Ford F-150 still offers configurations with single, crew, and extended cabs.

The new Ram 1500's redesign elevated its appearance to give it a more upscale facade. It still every inch the rugged Ram, so don't let that fool you. There are different headlights for each of the different trim levels. The top-shelf trims get a unique headlight setup with a chrome strip extended out from the grille. There's a special grille for the Rebel off-roading trim. The Ram 1500 no longer offers the single cab configuration but still has the crew and extended cab options.

Both the Ford F-150 and the Ram 1500 have everything from basic needs work trucks to premium high-end models loaded with features and tech. The top of the line models for both offer leather seats, top-shelf audio systems, and other comfort and convenience features. The work trucks for both have vinyl seats and basic infotainment systems.

For the mid-range trim levels, Ram has a clear advantage with its overall design and styling cues inside and outside. The materials used are top-quality with upscale finishes and aluminum plating. Overall, it offers a greater sense of refinement. They have an available 12-inch touch screen for the infotainment system which is perhaps the most impressive in the class.

The Ford F-150 has a decent mid-level design but feels dated and uses a lot of hard plastic.

When it comes to powertrain options, the Ford F-150 offers six options while the Ram 1500 offers three.

Ford F-150

  • 3.3-liter V6 engine
  • 2.7-liter turbocharged V6
  • 5.0-liter V8
  • 3.5-liter turbocharged V6
  • 3.0-liter diesel V6
  • 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 "High Output"

Ram 1500

  • 3.6-liter V6
  • 5.7-liter V8
  • 3.0-liter Diesel V6

The 3.3-liter V6 offered by the Ford F-150 doesn't quite match the 3.6-liter V6 of the Ram 1500. Ram's engine outperforms Ford's when it comes to power, fuel-efficiency, and towing capabilities.

The V8 engines seem comparable, but the Ram V8 offers a new feature called eTorque. eTorque is a new system that's a mild-hybrid offering an extra 130 pound-feet of torque and better fuel economy. The eTorque setup is standard on the V6 models and adds an extra 90 pound-feet of torque. It's optional for the Ram V8s.

Ford's High-Output EcoBoost V6 is only offered in the Raptor and Limited models. While its performance and off-roading capabilities are strong, the Ram Rebel is comparable and more affordable.

Both trucks have six-cylinder diesel engines offered that offer solid hauling and towing abilities. They do better on gas mileage than their gas-powered peers.

All trucks in the class are standard rear-wheel drive with optional four-wheel-drive. Four-wheel-drive is standard with the off-road models of both trucks.

The Ford F-150 utilizes a 10-speed automatic transmission for all but the base V6 models. The Ram 1500 has an exclusive eight-speed automatic transmission. Neither truck offers a manual transmission.

The Ram 1500 has an advantage with its eTorque system and greater value.
